I turned 49 years old on November 6, 2017. I don’t normally give my birthday much thought, but this one (or perhaps thinking ahead to the next one) led me to spend a lot of time in quiet reflection. Next year, I’ll celebrate the “Big Five-O”. A half century. Two score and ten!
After much thought, I decided to commit to a few bold personal goals for my 50th birthday. I also decided to take the bold steps to actually write them down and to tell others!
Putting a goal on paper (or a blog in this case) gives it more clarity. It makes the goal seem more achievable. Telling others about these goals gives me a sense of personal accountability and motivation.
So, here are the two personal goals I will achieve by my 50th birthday on November 6, 2018:
- Lose 50 pounds. I could stand to lose more, but achieving this goal will get me back to a weight that will make me healthier and happy.
- Complete a 500-mile cycling trip. I plan to ride the scenic and historic Natchez Trace Parkway (444 miles from Natchez, MS to Nashville, TN), plus an extra 56 miles spread over a six-day period to reach my goal. My plan is to complete the 500-mile journey on my 50th birthday.
So, there it is folks. Out there for the world to see.
I plan to write about my journey toward the accomplishment of both goals.
I hope you’ll follow along.
